Manager Neil Akers says "The 2007/08 season is all about progression and the aim of the
Reserves is to ensure that each and every player can look back and confidently say they have improved as a player. Hopefully
some will have progressed to the first team along the way or be banging on the door and applying pressure. So far there have
been many encouraging performances even if results have not always been favourable. All we ask is for the players to give
100% effort, that way they cannot fail to improve."

Sunday 9 March 2008
Derby County Ladies
1 - 5 Loughboro' Students
Midland Combination Reserve League
Scorer: Burns
The Reserves finished their league campaign with a re-arranged home game against Loughborough Students, amazingly this
being the only game called off this season causing the early finish. With Nikki Croxall back in goal this allowed Hannah Dinnigan
to revert to her usual striking role, although somewhat withdrawn due to a small tactical switch.
Derby's slightly tweaked formation took a little while to settle down but once
it had provided the basis for more passing options. Emily Maskrey & Dinnigan dropping off Sally Butterfield and picking
up the pieces as well as the lay offs. A few good pieces of play forced a number of corners and crosses in to the box without
any clear cut chances coming their way. It was a bit against the run of play that the Students had the first good opportunity
when poor defending from Derby, Abbie Clarke getting the wrong
side of the striker coming in from wide, forced Croxall to produce a good save. Derby responded in kind straight away with
Dinnigan releasing Butterfield who would have expected to do better, seeing her shot come straight back off the keeper.
Derby looked the more likely side in the first half and the signs were good
but as per too often this season the self destruct button was at the ready. The student was allowed a run towards the box, Jess
Sippits rather than staying on her feet lunged in right on the edge of the box, bringing down the player. It looked borderline
in or out from touchline, the ref confirming later that the challenge was right on the line and therefore a penalty. The penalty
came back off the post, out to another Student who was partially blocked by Becky Smith, only for the penalty taker to then
slide home. 0-1 after 43 mins.
A completely different team talk at half time was now needed. The formation was changed to go more attacking and to
get back in to the game and continue to cause problems.
However, 47 mins on the clock and Georgina Unthank was caught square on out on the flank, allowing an easy cross to
the near post. The striker got past the defender too easily and got a shot in that Croxall will be disappointed she didn't
do better with as it squirmed in. 0-2 and all to do.
Derby got right back in to the game on 66 mins making it 1-2. Clarke delivering
a good cross, Maskrey won the header for Leanne Burns to hit home in to the corner
of the keeper's grasp.
Remember that self destruct button, well on 78 & 79 mins it was hit again allowing the Students to take full control
of the game at 1-4. Game over inside about 60 seconds. Players allowed too much time and weak challenges being made conspired
to gift the points away. A fifth duly arrived on 86mins to wrap it up at 1-5.
A thoroughly disappointing end to a season that had frequently shown so much promise. Having said that it would be
wrong to look upon the season with this game being the last reflection. There has been a remarkable improvement in many of
the players this season, a great deal of contenders for all the awards to be given, whether it be Players Players, Managers,
or Most Improved. The team spirit has been excellent and overall they have fought for every result. A few less individual
errors earlier on in the season where games were lost when victories were more than in their grasp, would have seen a much
improved league position. The key thing is for the players to take this on board and learn for next year. They have the ability,
lets hope they continue to develop and look to knock even harder on the first team door next season.
Sunday 2 March 2008
Leicester City Ladies 3 - 1 Derby County
Ladies
Midland Combination Reserve League
Scorer: Butterfield
Having
played the cup game away at Leicester City Ladies only a month earlier Derby
knew exactly what to expect from the match and were geared up accordingly. With Nikki Croxall unavailable it meant that Hannah
Dinnigan donned the gloves, a role she's more than capable of filling. With Sophie Griffiths also unavailable it meant a start
for Kayley Harris after her sub appearances having come back from injury.
The
game was scrappy to start with, a winding blowing diagonally across the pitch having some impact, but neither side were really
able to get hold of the game. Derby however took the lead
on 21 mins when Dinnigan's long goal kick sailed over the defenders heads for Sally
Butterfield to run on to and stroke home past the keeper, 1-0.
Leicester looked to hit back shortly later
when the strong no.14 wasn't closed down and her shot forced a good save out of Dinnigan. Butterfield looked to have double
the lead only minutes later after being released by Abbie Clarke, but saw her shot curl just wide. Derby were looking the more likely to score but their final ball was too often over hit,
with no-one really consistently appreciating this and adjusting accordingly.
A
half time lead of 1-0 was a pleasing one but a reminder from the management that they were in the same position only weeks
ago and threw it away!
The
words were probably still ringing in their ears when a debatable free kick was given 30 yards out. The shot was hit, off the
underside of the bar and bounced down over the line back up in to the net. 1-1 and a visible lift for the hosts. Only
a minute later it was 2-1! An awful clearance by the panicking defender was hit straight across the edge of the Rams
box, the striker accepting the gift and slid the ball home. Derby
tried to lift themselves and get back at the opponents but never really looked convinced they would get back in to it. The
no.9 who had played well in midfield in the previous contest was running the defence ragged, being allowed far too much time
and space. Yes a quick player to handle but the defenders instead of getting tight stayed too far off and gave her too much
respect.
On
73 mins the game was effectively over as history repeated itself and Derby blew a goal lead to lose it 3-1 as the sub striker
was again afforded the time and space to finish. A very disappointing end to the game.
With
just the game to go on Sunday against Loughborough Students Derby must now win in order to try and put pressure on
the surrounding teams. It's strongly looking like a 6th or 7th place will be attained rather than the 3rd/4th
that had been an achievable option only weeks earlier. So let's make sure we finish the season on a high!
Sunday 17 February 2008
Derby County Ladies 2
- 1 Wolverhampton Wanderers
Midland Combination Reserve League
Scorer: Butterfield, Burns
Derby welcomed
Wolves looking to once again avenge a defeat in the return match having lost away in a match they certainly felt they should
have won. With Abbie Clarke with the first team, Kerry Brentnall came back in to the side after injury.
Wolves actually
started off brightly with Nikki Croxall being called up on in the third minute to thwart an opportunity, but Derby hit back and took the lead on five mins. Jessica Sippits won the ball and played it
in to the gap for Sally Butterfield to run on to. Butterfield's shot was weak
but the stand-in keeper fumbled this in to the net, 1-0. A gift but that little bit of luck that has deserted us so often
this season was so very welcome.
Wolves almost struck straight back, the player waltzing through some poor attempts to
win the ball, the finish was fortunately lacking. Derby then
saw an effort come back off the bar from Amanda Nicholas and a few other efforts were tamely saved by the keeper.
Wolves
equalised on 33 mins. The ball being won in their own half, people were diving in to challenges or being caught square on
and making it easy for the player to run through with the ball. A very disappointing goal, a bit more intelligence when defending
and it was easily avoidable.
Half
time came at 1-1, Derby not having tested the keeper enough
by any stretch of the imagination.
The
second half saw an improvement, with Derby trying to keep
hold of the ball a bit better and with more of an understanding of their positions, looked more comfortable in the match.
On
57 mins Derby regained the lead. Hannah Dinnigan whipping
in a free kick, Leanne Burns nipping in front of the keeper to find the back of
the net.
This
was the end of the scoring and in honesty Derby looked reasonably
comfortable and never in any real danger. They were however missing their shooting boots, with a number of players in good
positions on the edge of the box but failing to trouble the keeper with miss-hit efforts.
Emily
Maskrey saw an effort saved after a good twist and turn in the box whilst Amy Buxton saw her effort blocked after a corner
fell for her, but Derby couldn't find a third.
All
in all a reasonably comfortable win for Derby, it should have
been much more emphatic though. Something that the team will need to be mindful of in the two remaining games. Chances must
be taken otherwise it leads to pressure. Having gained six out of six points as per the management's expectations, they will
now hope to finish with a similar total from the remaining games and ensure as high a finish as possible.

Sunday 10 February 2008
Derby County Ladies
4 - 1 Northampton Town
Midland Combination Reserve League
Scorer: Butterfield, Nicholas, Maskrey(2)
Derby welcomed Northampton looking to avenge the away defeat having given three early goals to the hosts,
eventually losing 3-2. With only one change to the team, Jessica Sippits replacing Joanne Sheerin in defence, Jo being very
unfortunate after an excellent performance in the previous match, however the management selecting the side with one eye on
the oppositions strengths. Amy Pearce replaced the holidaying Amy Buxton on the bench, whilst Kerry Brentnall was back to
fitness to give a healthy squad of sixteen players.
The
pitch was quite sticky in patches and not exactly the best surface conducive to elegant football however Derby tried to play
through their midfield when possible early on. Much of the focus in the opening period was down the left with Hannah Dinnigan
combining with Sally Butterfield to create some openings which were closed down at the last second. The first real sign of
danger came on the half hour mark when Leanne Burns went on a jinking run in to box with the keeper making an excellent save
to deny her what would've been a fantastic goal. The Rams didn't have to wait long though.
On
33mins Abbie Clarke won possession, played it simply to Burns who picked out the run of Butterfield who chased down towards the keeper before calmly stroking the ball past her, 1-0!
Only
4 mins later Derby forced a corner from the right. Dinnigan
swung it in, the ball being headed up rather than clear. Amanda Nicholas then
amazed us all with an acrobatic overhead kick in to the far corner (complaints of the sciatica disappearing!?), 2-0!
Derby took time
to recover from the shock of this and it took until just before half time for it to be 3-0. After a foray down the left Derby
opened up the play with Dinnigan spraying it out to Clarke, her cross finding Butterfield at the far post who returned the
ball back across for Emily Maskrey to convert.
A
half time lead of 3-0 was exactly what the rams deserved and it had been a very good first half performance.
The
second half was less of a spectacle as Derby didn't really
take the game on as they should have done. Whilst continuing to press, the tempo had gone from the first half and that meant
fewer chances being created, the keeper making some good saves from those that came.
Dinnigan,
after working her socks off, made way for Kayley Harris to continue her comeback from injury just after the hour mark. Susan
Daybell & Amy Pearce coming on later in the game for valuable game time.
Northampton
pulled one back with 83 mins on the clock, no-one dealt with the ball on the edge of the box with any authority and the ball
fell to the striker to find the roof of the net. 3-1. Derby
could've had some nervous moments from then on but instead scored again on 88mins. Butterfield playing Maskrey through who steered home the ball past the onrushing keeper, 4-1!
A
deserved victory which takes the side up to 4th in the table. Although having played a few more games, it's up to the Rams
to put the points on the board in the final 3 games to end the season on a high and ensure as high a placing as possible.
Best wishes for a speedy recovery to the Northampton player
who suffered what was believed to be a broken collar bone.
